Fragments of a Shattered Sky

Planet Asteroids

MISSION BRIEFING
This system contains the shattered remnants of a planet that suffered some cataclysmic impact event eons ago, completely fracturing the planet’s crust, as well as ejecting roughly a quarter of its mass off into space. Preliminary evidence suggests that this planet was inhabited at some point, although whether this was the case at the time of the fracturing is unknown.

At any rate, this planet is of immense anthropological and archaeological interest to us, which is why it's a problem that looters have been spotted in the area – likely searching for artifacts and antiquities to be auctioned off to private buyers on the black market.

We need you to protect several key sites so that they can be studied and understood by actual archaeologists in their proper context, instead of sitting on some rich collector’s mantel, divorced from all meaning. We’d very much like the opportunity to discover more about the fascinating history of this planet.

Good hunting, Captain.
MAP SETUP
Fragments of a Shattered Sky A) Player Deployment Area
B) Planet (place where shown)
C) Asteroids x6 (Random Layout). Each Asteroid must be Range ≥1 apart.

MISSION PARAMETERS
Objective Preserve the Digsites: Locate the most valuable archaeological sites and prevent them from being looted. If too many sites are pillaged, the Mission is considered a Failure.
XP Reward If at least half (round up) of the archaeological sites survive intact, each player earns 1XP. If all sites survive intact, each player earns an additional 1XP.
Retreat Options Captains may retreat from any Federation edge.
Mission End At the end of Round 10, all remaining players automatically retreat.
Destroyed Players These players gain 1 fewer XP (minimum 0).

SUCCESS

We most certainly appreciate your efforts out there, Captain, as does posterity. Speaking strictly for myself, I am dying to know just what happened here. Did the inhabitants know the cataclysm was coming, or were they completely blindsided? Did they try to prevent it in any way, or leave any sort of lasting monument to their civilization? So many interesting questions, and I can’t wait to find out the answers!

FAILURE

While not world-ending, this is nonetheless an incredibly disappointing result. As soon as an artifact is removed from its original position, all its historical and anthropological value is lost, because the context in which it’s found gives scholars important information about where it came from and what it might have been used for. Now, the entire history of this civilization has been reduced to a handful of meaningless trinkets.

SPECIAL RULES

Mission Token Setup: Take Mission Tokens #1 through #6 and flip them number-side down. Shuffle them, and place one on each Asteroid Token. These represent the potentially-valuable archaeological sites that need to be protected.

Designating Valuable Sites: For each player, roll one D6. The result indicates a Mission Token that is considered a valuable site. Re-roll any duplicate results.

Search Orders: Ships with Search orders use the closest facedown Mission Token as their target when choosing a maneuver. At the start of the Combat Phase, each Searching ship within Range 1 of a facedown Mission Token may flip to reveal it.

If within Range 1 of a valuable site, and there is no player-controlled ship within Range 2, place the Mission Token on that ship's Ship Card. Otherwise, leave it in place. Once all the valuable sites have been revealed, these ships change to Attack Orders.
