Sectors Z8 and Z9 (together known informally as The Verge) is an as-yet unexplored region of space in the Beta Quadrant, located galactic anticenter at the edge of the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way. It spans roughly 10,000 light years across and lies approximately 13,000 light years from Earth.
The Verge was first discovered by the civilian merchant freighter Silver Cormorant after being pulled into an unstable wormhole on the fringes of Federation space and stranded in the region once the local terminus of the wormhole shifted position. Their journey home took twenty-five years to complete, and upon arrival, Starfleet began planning an official expedition to study and catalogue the region.
Exploration of the Verge is the first stage of an ongoing effort to breach the edge of the galaxy, after preliminary observations revealed the Galactic Barrier beginning to exhibit mysterious signs of decay. The goal is to establish a foothold within the region, in order to make future expeditions easier.
In addition to the Federation's official presence, the promise of an unexplored frontier has also attracted civilians hoping to stake a claim and earn their fortune, as well as corporations looking to capitalize on the region's untapped resources.
Naturally, this limitless potential has also lured pirates, smugglers, and other unsavory types looking to get rich through dishonest means, thereby also forcing Starfleet into the role of de facto marshals trying to prevent the exploitation of the region.
